Black Negative Music Is Not Most Profitable – So Why Hot 107.9 and V-103 Rotate It So Much?

We have been working on collecting data to address the Black radio myth that negative self-hate rap music is something the Black radio audience demand. What we found from our research is not only the self-hate negative rap music is not in high demand and furthermore, it is not even the most profitable form of music. So the real question we will bring to the FCC during Hot 107.9 and V-103 FCC license renewal next spring is why are they playing these kind of music to the Black community so much? We got the data and we know the facts – all that strip club rap songs they play in Atlanta, all that gang banging music they play here in Atlanta and cats wanting to claim they can move weight and sold coke is not even the most optimal music for corporate profitability. What we do know from our data is the Black community overwhelming spends their money and attention on artists like Beyonce and TI that speaks more about ambition and strong relationships. We have more data that shows Black people listen to other urban music genres more than negative rap music promoted on these two radio stations. So we going to put both Hot 107.9 and V-103 on the spot and have them tell us why they play all that negative self-hate strip club songs on their radio stations towards a young, poorly educated Georgia Black population all day long? Because I would like to know the answer to that question, especially with the data that we gathered that does not support the fact there is a profit motive to it. I don’t give a sh*t if these scumbags artists show up to perform at these radio station summer concerts and fall Black expo events these radio stations host because even that data shows followers of negative Black music are broke as hell and don't spend at these events compared to other Black listeners of other Black genres out there. I know what the answer is and I can tell you right now. They are going to fall back and claim freedom of speech when we press their ass to the wall. First they going to make up garbage about the people want this kind of music – that’s not true. Then they going to say they rotate the popular requested songs which I know the science behind that, what people request (nasty music) and what people spend money behind (affirmative/inspirational music) are two different paradigms. And because both Hot 107.9 and V-103 is in this game for profit, then their profit model is ass-backward. The bottom line is I believe both V-103 and Hot 107.9 is reinforcing negative media programming into young Black people heads based on perception, a baseless negative perception they have about the Black community at large they claim to be serving. I also believe they are promoting a misleading demographic to advertisers claiming regular Black folks listen to that negative crap and we want to go finance a car payment or get a new mobile phone plan after listening to 2Chainz and ish. That lie and ignorant naïve crap about music does not influence teenagers and young adults, that’s something only an idiot says. For decades, scientists have done behavioral research on primates with negative media programming, primal resort to sex and violence, publish reports on that ish and that ish is programmed on a larger scale at large towards the Black community in a negative way. And Hot 107.9 and V-103 serves as a proxy and have no real rhyme or reason or not even a true profit optimization justification to play this kind of negative music to the Black community and we will call them out on it. It’s pretty disgusting you got DJs, radio executives and so-called radio personalities working Black radio engaged in this bullsh*t and ain’t got the balls to do right by their people. Like I told every last one of you before – we Black people ain’t never created our own demand for goods and service, stuff was imposed on us. When we created hip-hop, it was bought out by corporations and transformed into negative rap music being imposed on the Black community. The hard core truth many of you Black people don’t want to hear is they are promoting negative music to your Black ass to give White consumers the impression we Black folks enjoy that negative rap music, to make the “lurking” White audience feel they should enjoy that negative rap music also – their real target customer at the end of the day. And the data is there to support this thesis and profit motive that your Black behind is being used by media organizations to make you appear negative to sell to a non-Black audience, the same racist pattern they been doing for 100 years with blackface and minstrel shows. So yeah, let’s give Hot 107.9 and V-103 some time to justify why they play all that negative strip club, fake gang banging, drug dealing music towards the Black community all day long when data shows Black people are bigger and more beautiful than that and do not support that music and is not the most profitable form of music out there to justify why they rotate that kind of negative music so heavily. And of course, you know me and my crew, masters of data and informatics will kindly break down the facts and numbers, bring in consortiums and take to the FCC when the license renewal comes up how V-103 and Hot 107.9 been exploiting the Black community they claiming to serve and laugh when they resort to the First Amendment when all is said and done.

  1. I hate hearing that stupid birthday song. And when I saw the video….what the hell was that? These stations play that music cause the label pay them. They put out false promotions. Like a day with an artist on tour with all expenses paid,,,then a few weeks later it turns into a chance to win $50,000 instead. But when it was all about wiinning a chance to spend time with the artist…that particular artist is in rotation heavy. They did it with Jay-z and Kanye West. They did it with Alicia Keys last week. Just completely swapped the promo. Rihanna songs are considered POP. Here in Chicago, they play it on the hip hop station because she is a performer at their upcoming concert. What are they promoting….Time to spend 7 days, at 7 concerts with Rihanna and travel with ehr on her private charter. Like that’s really going to happen? As if a person will get that close to the artist. I bet in a week or so or right before the concert it turns into another $50,000 cash promo. The stations head to need to quit it. I only listen for the morning shows anyhow but the commercials are terrible.

  2. LMAO! Now this is ignorant! NOT to justify what these radio stations are doing, but how you single them out. You’re talking “profits”, radio stations wouldn’t be able to charge (make a profit) if the audience didn’t listen. So its obvious there’s a demand for the format. These two stations aren’t the only stations playing these songs. There are hundreds across the U.S. Now with Pandora in the mix and other new digital platforms, are you “calling them out” as well?

I must say, I DO NOT agree with the music played, but I am mature enough to realize its ALL entertainment. We can’t depend on media and technology to raise our children. My parents taught me a lot, which I give credit to realize its just entertainment.

Is there something wrong with the content of SOME of the music played? YES! Will it change? Likely NOT! We do need to take responsibility, starting at HOME! Placing the “blame game” only on radio is ignorant.

    1. LMAO! Now this is ignorant!
Is this your introductory dismissal statement? That we have data to support our statement and belief is ignorant? There is nothing ignorant about this blog – anybody who read this blog will tell you that.

NOT to justify what these radio stations are doing and I must say, I DO NOT agree with the music played
I believe you are being hypocritical, if you are not justifying or agreeing with the radio stations, you wouldn’t written this drivel you just posted. It is obvious why you would even come out of the woodpile to post this, but for argument sake, I will defer your true motivations and speak to the subject at hand.

but how you single them out.
They single out the Black community and promote/advertise Black people in a monolithic manner as their audience.

You’re talking “profits”, radio stations wouldn’t be able to charge (make a profit) if the audience didn’t listen. These two stations aren’t the only stations playing these songs. You clearly deflecting with the “others do it too” rhetoric. Pandora and other new digital platforms are part of the data we collected homey. Also, you are obviously making up uneducated bullshit as you was going along. Digital broadcasters have to pay certain royalties for songs that terrestrial broadcasters like Hot 107.9 and V-103 do not have to pay so digital media has to focus on profitability to stay in business – that’s part of the dataset we collected. Hot 107.9 and V-103 plays the living ish out of songs and don’t have to pay the same kind of royalties. If you had a clue about this radio game, you would have known that or did you leave that small detail out in your rhetoric?

So its obvious there’s a demand for the format.
Interesting..so someone opens up liquor stores, fried foods and corner store churches in the hood and no other kind of business and because Black people in the vicinity have no choice but to go there as there are no other options, that’s a demand? How long has that nonsense been played about “Black demand” by imposing and reinforcing negativity upon the Black community? That’s like giving pigs or the fish in your aquarium some BS to eat, then turn around and say they like that crap and that’s the demand. You not looking good even bringing that kind of argument among real Black people here, homey.

I am mature enough to realize its ALL entertainment. We can’t depend on media and technology to raise our children. My parents taught me a lot, which I give credit to realize its just entertainment.
Entertainment for who? It’s entertainment for you because you are a consumer looking to be entertained. Most of us understand data manipulation and propaganda and the techniques and tactics and the intended goal and effects. You arrived at a site full of cats that understand data and believe you can just talk some BS out the side of your neck and appear convincing.

We in a new day and age homey, we fighting for our people and we going to fight smart – that BS you bringing to the table ain’t going to cut it, especially with cats of my caliber.

  3. Ed, you created a post We Need Our Own Media Framework to address this very issue. One of the best articles on the site. A reader responded similar to GW: Putting the framework together is the easy part. Getting our brainwashed people to watch and support will be virtually impossible. You responded “Best way to counter that is make shows that make fun of the brainwashed people and go hard on them. They’ll watch it then, trust me.”

Can you hit us with the IPTV FrameWork briefing this week?

  4. Cathy Hughes and her son have been running that format for years. I liked your blog about the new media framework. I think we do have a choice to what we want to listen to and support in our community.

  5. It is true that not many people are a fan of the negative self-hate rap music and therefore the question of profits does not arise at all. A very interesting article!
