Why We Think Urban Dance Music Producers Are Obligated to Create Local and Global Social Responsibility Policies

mixingdowntheworld The Chicago House Music producers, the Detroit Techno producers, the South London Afro House producers and others in places from Toronto, San Francisco, Miami and Baltimore must accept and incorporate social responsibility in their growth strategy. The economic impact of a good urban dance DJ is profound and can create more jobs and growth in an urban area than any drug dealer or local rap artist combined. This is why we are having this conversation on Dream and Hustle so we all can understand the social impact and potential of accelerating the urban dance music genre to the level it belong. Our project for the urban dance industry here on this blog is to create the “rails” to move the urban dance music industry forward and that is through creation of media channels to push the genre, crowdfunding urban dance producers who can tour and host festivals, create information resources to hold festivals and establish hubs in our inner cities. I’m also constructing a proposal to pitch a crowdfunding campaign to create a “house music park” in Chicago on either the North, West Side or South Side that plays house music 24/7, have a 126bpm interactive fountain and also have a walk of fame of the global house legends to give them permanent honor. And of course, accommodate food trucks and vendor booths in this house music park. Everything I mentioned above are “rails” and you pretty much can know this will come into reality if I said me and the 3rd Strategic Institute going to do it. But we also need “trains” to be able to ride the rails. The trains on the rails perform the actual transportation and create the real economic benefit and this rests solely on the shoulder of the house music producers. House music producers will have to realize they are bigger than their tracks and extend themselves to the bigger picture of realizing they are the center of an ecosystem to drive the genre to a new level. If we look at the success of the EDM industry, we will see that it is an empowering industry that create jobs, quick gigs and temp help, promote extremely creative media/video producers who can become the talent of tomorrow. Urban dance music can give that opportunity. Also, urban dance music producers can also spread social messages in their media in a way that other music cannot do and do not have to answer to anybody. This is the key here I would advise urban dance music producers to not worry about being played on Black radio, shown on BET or any of these other so-called industry. Today, you house music producers got digital download sites, streaming radio stations and club venues and video sites to promote to an audience bigger than any Black radio station out there to the urban community. It’s okay to dream big, go surreal, be yourself and not let yourself be confined to some d*ckwad Black media culture that promote cheap sex and violence and elitism for viewership and corporate advertising. I’m really making a personal appeal to the African-American brothas and sistas in the urban dance industry to make this bigger than them from now on. You guys can make a profound positive change the world right now if you realize the social impact of what you can bring to the table with the urban dance music industry. I’m telling you this and that is why I’m 100% in to help make things happen. But the urban dance music scene has to be positive and uplifting and about social responsibility. We got to be positive and that was a mistake that happened to the urban house music scene. See, the cats in house music industry don’t want to admit that the Black-orientated house music industry fell off once they started producing negative songs like FYITA by the Outthere Brothers and “beat that b*tch with a bat” and cornball Frank Ski with his “whores in this house” crap. They don’t want to admit that truth up in Chicago but I can tell them and we got to learn from those mistakes from the mid-90s to today and move forward in a new direction. Let’s talk about incorporate social responsibility – I would request as I do my part that house music producers consider and create a social responsibility policy. We got to move beyond just making tracks and start making a movement as people want to claim. And to make a movement, you got to have social responsibility in place. So let’s talk about some of the social responsibility things to consider. Promote Economic Growth. Urban dance music groups can establish positive venues to spin positive vibes in urban communities and setup tour dates all around. Short-term jobs are created for festivals and long term jobs in the entertainment industry from media jobs to club venue jobs to construction jobs to create these venues, all done from urban dance music. Promote Diversity. Doesn’t matter about sexual orientation, race, nationality or caste system as long as the music is good and people are enjoying it. Just focusing on positivity where anybody in this world can feel like they belong and feel uplifted. Promote Global. The genre can go worldwide and take people worldwide. I live in Atlanta and have no problem flying to a hosted house music festival in Costa Rica or Brazil and there is a getaway package for brothas and sistas from all over the world to get together. There can be one in Nigeria that will give us all an excuse to fly there and enjoy both Naija DJs and House Music and Afrobeat and Caribbean rhythms in a gigantic African Diaspora dance festival. Promote Creative Growth. The dance music biggest benefit is to put on first-time groups and video producers and get them introduced to the industry working with a dance track. Help these artists build up a resume to the point they can tour and promote and have the dance music industry to thank. Also, many artists are dropped from labels who can start over in the dance industry. In summary, me and my team are going to create the “rails” and we will be showing how to do it here. But me and my crew work on social responsibility to make quality of life better all around us – that is our personal mission. So, I’m asking and this is a personal appeal from me to the urban dance music producers to take a moment and realize the positive impact they can make all over the world, elevate from just tracks to a social responsible positive movement that can uplift everybody they touch with their music and creative productions. All urban dance music producers, take some time and generate a social responsibility statement that you do not need to publish but you keep as your guiding principle to use the music to promote positive, uplifting and energetic vibes for the world to groove to.

  1. I could see something like that in Oakland, DC, Detroit, New York, and a bunch of other large cities. I don’t see why artists wouldn’t go for it. I remember the old post about house music going viral. If you’re crowdfunding, it won’t take long to raise the necessary funds.

  3. Ashee. I noted in an earlier post that you wanted to focus on the producers and Dance groups rather than the DJs. In EDM I recently noted that the producer and the DJ act as one or are one. Groups like Major Lazer and acts like Skrillek produce mixes and DJ-play them alongside other artist’s tracks. How should the DJ/Producers join in this movement. I’m interested…….. Seko

    1. DJ Seko,

      Skrillex as well as AfroJack and Calvin Harris and Avicii and even Axwell have live singers and live acts performing at their shows while they are DJing. So a dance music DJ in the ecosystem we would like to create goes beyond someone playing mp3 files on mixxx at weddings and corporate parties.

      Modern DJs who take their growth and career seriously should be in the business of producing tracks and bringing these acts on tour to perform as well as spin tracks. Keep in mind that “producing” does not mean actually creating the music – producing is the financing and putting on, not the creation of the music itself.

      So with that said, there is no real difference between a DJ who puts on act like a Benny Benassi or an electronic group like Daft Punk, they both can tour in the same mega festival. However, I want to cultivate urban dance music acts because it is a big missing component that can create stability and growth to the genre.

  4. Hmmmmm. Interesting concept. I’ve seen Major Lazer give a great interactive performance with dancers and crowd interaction. I haven’t seen the aforementioned DJs with live acts and singers but I can imagine that being a great performance level. I have noticed the I may have missed it but I haven’t read exactly what the artists would need to do. I’ll keep my attention on this. I’ve always wanted to include my production in the events I perform. Interestingly enough it’s only in the events where I play electronic music where the crowd really seems to value new sounds and new experiences. The House crowd wants to be on a musical trip and will even party to unfamiliar tracks that they like. While the Top-40, R&B, Hip-Hop, Reggae, Soul events are thrown off if a song they aren’t familiar with is mixed in. I want to be involved. I’ll continue to be about the business of “producing tracks and bringing these acts on tour to perform as well as spin tracks.” Keep it coming Bro’ !
